1.2. Terminology

Table 1.  TerminologyThe following table lists the terms used in this document.
Terminology Description
Device model Corresponds to a software module that provides a similar or equivalent functionality than a hardware component. A collection of these software modules are used in the Intel® Simics® simulation.
Intel® Simics® target configuration Corresponds to the target machine and their settings. This is usually loaded from the .simics, .include and .py scripts that are provided along with the Intel® Simics® model installation. New scripts can also be created to define a new customized configuration.
Intel® Simics® simulator host Refers to the physical computer over which the Intel® Simics® simulator runs. This document also refers to this as “host” or “host machine”.
Target serial console A target system serial interface (associated to a UART module in the simulated device) that allows the interaction between the target and the user.
Target system Hardware that is being simulated. This document also refers to this as “target machine”. An Intel® Simics® simulation can contain multiple target machines (for example, when simulating a network).
