42.3.2. Writing Text at Run Time without Double Buffering
If Text double buffering is off, the Text Box IP uses only a single buffer. Both the control interface and the IP use the buffer simultaneously. To ensure that changes to the text are clean, you may either:
- Make changes only to lines the IP is not using
- Poll the CURRENT_LINE register to see which line of the string the IP is currently generating.
The returned value may be ahead by 1. Avoid changes to both the returned line and line before.
- Write to character indices that do not correspond to row number CURRENT_LINE; that is indices between (CURRENT_LINE * NUM_CHARS_PER_LINE) and ((CURRENT_LINE * (NUM_CHARS_PER_LINE + 1)) - 1).
- Poll the CURRENT_LINE register to see which line of the string the IP is currently generating.
- Stop the IP whenever changes are to be made (this stops video output)
- Write 0 to the CONTROL register, to stop the IP after the current field.
- Poll bit 0 of the STATUS register, to wait for the IP to stop.
- Make all edits to the character buffer as necessary, by writing to addresses 0x200 onwards.
- Write 1 to the CONTROL register, to start the IP again.
