4. Power and Thermal Calculator (PTC)

The Power and Thermal Calculator (PTC) calculates the power consumption of an Agilex™ 5 FPGA and generates the thermal parameters needed for a system thermal simulation or evaluation of an existing cooling design solution.

There are two versions of the PTC:

  • A standalone version that you can use without having an actual RTL design. You provide all input to this version manually. The standalone version is essential at the early stages of projects when power and cooling requirements must be determined, and no RTL design is yet available.
  • The Quartus Power Analyzer, which is part of the Quartus® Prime software, can be used for thermal analysis of Agilex™ 5 devices. The power analyzer can perform a thermal analysis of the detailed power map of a compiled design. You should use this version whenever possible, because it provides the most accurate thermal data.

The Quartus Power Analyzer can export a .qptc file, which you can import into the PTC for ease of use and what-if analysis.

The PTC can export a .ptc file which you can import into the PTC for ease of use and faster what-if analysis.

This document assumes the PTC version 23.4. Whenever possible, you should always use the latest version of the PTC, because power models may evolve over time. The status of the power model of a device is shown on the Main tab of the PTC, and is listed as either Preliminary or Final. For more information, refer to:
