Our manufacturing scope and scale enable us to provide our customers with a broad range of leading-edge products. Integrated manufacturing has been foundational to our success, enabling product optimization, improved economics, and supply resilience. As semiconductor manufacturing becomes more complex, Intel is one of the few remaining firms in the world, and the only one in the United States, that can do both leading-edge design and manufacturing in-house.
A Heritage of Innovation
It all starts with innovative processes and packaging technologies. For decades Intel engineers have pushed the frontiers of Moore’s Law with inventions such as High-K Metal Gate, strained silicon, and the 3D FinFET transistor. Today, we invest billions of dollars every year to drive our R&D engine, but it’s not just about silicon innovations. Intel’s most recent advanced packaging innovations such as Foveros and EMIB allow us to interconnect multiple chips on a tiny package.
A Global Factory Network
Once our chip architects create the highly complex blueprint for new computer chips, they’re sent to one of our massive semiconductor fabrication facilities, or fabs, for high-volume manufacturing. We are continuing to invest in expanding our global factory network to meet sustained long-term demand for Intel products, while we also open our fab doors wide for foundry customers with our new Intel Foundry Services.
A Responsive and Resilient Supply Chain
Intel manufacturing operates at a megascale worldwide, requiring a global supply chain that stretches across multiple continents. Once they leave the fab, Intel chips are shipped to assembly and test factories where they are put into protective packages, tested, and then sent to one of our distribution hubs across the globe. Intel ships nearly 2 billion units a year to almost 2,000 customers. Our vast supply chain includes almost 16,000 suppliers in 200 countries.
A Commitment to Our Communities
Our global manufacturing investments have a major impact on the economies and communities where we operate. Building a new fab fully equipped costs about $10 billion and creates about 10,000 jobs, one third of them in high tech. We are also committed to sustainability, with programs focused on water conservation, waste reduction, carbon emissions, and more.
Our Global Footprint
We have ten manufacturing sites—six are wafer fabrication, four are assembly/test facilities. Our manufacturing facilities are primarily used for silicon wafer manufacturing, assembling, and testing of our products. We operate in a network of manufacturing facilities integrated as one factory to provide the most flexible supply capacity. Our new process technologies are transferred identically from a central development fab to each manufacturing facility. After transfer, the network of factories and the development fab collaborate to continue driving operational improvements. This enables fast ramp of the operation, fast learning, and better quality control.
Making computer chips requires one of the most complex manufacturing processes humans have ever devised. For more than 50 years, Intel engineers and scientists have continually faced—then overcome—challenges posed by the physics of squeezing billions of microscopic transistors onto ever-smaller computer chips. Delivering on this promise requires a massive global team, world-class factory infrastructure and a robust supply chain ecosystem.
