Summary

Steps to adjust the resolution to 1920x1080@29Hz on devices that support 4K.

Description

When the HDMI output is connected to certain devices which support 3840x2160 resolutions, but 1920x1080 is selected as the output resolution, the laptop outputs a 3840x2160 29Hz resolution with an invalid VIC code of 0.

Resolution

Intel has investigated this situation and confirmed it to be normal behavior. This is because Windows® 10 does "virtual mode set" most of the time, which means it will program the panel's preferred timing and scale the source image with GPU or display engine scalers.

To set an EDID timing, try the following options:

  • Use Intel Graphics Command Center's Custom Resolution option
  • Display Properties -> Advanced -> Adapter Properties -> List All Modes
