Intel® Server Boards based on Intel® 62X Series Chipsets

Note On this video, we used the Intel® Server Board S2600WF–based server system. The same steps are also applicable to other Intel® Server Boards/Systems based on Intel® 62X Series Chipsets.

How do I update from the Embedded EFI Shell?

  1. Download the latest firmware package.
  2. Extract the downloaded firmware. Once extracted, the files are in a folder.
  3. Format a USB flash drive in FAT32.
  4. Copy all the files inside the extracted folder, and then paste the files in the root directory of the USB flash drive, without creating a folder.
  5. Start the system and press F6 repeatedly to enter boot options.
  6. After you see boot options, connect the USB flash drive and click Internal EFI Shell. Press any key to start the update.
  7. After the firmware update starts, after the update of opcode area, you are prompted to select any of the functions in the following list:
    • Update only the SDR
    • Update only the FRU
    • Update only the SDR and FRU
    • Modify the Asset Tag
    • Exit FRU/SDR Update
  8. Clicking the third option prompts you to provide information about the chassis. Providing chassis information is optional. You can select No to skip the process.
  9. After the firmware is updated, the process is completed. Remove the USB flash drive and restart the server.
  10. After the restart, open the BIOS to confirm the new firmware version.

How do I update from the operating system using Intel® One Boot Flash Update (Intel® OFU) utility?

  1. See the list of operating systems that are supported in Intel® OFU User Guide in the Supported Operating Systems section.
  2. Download the latest OFU firmware update package.
  3. Download latest version of Intel® One Boot Flash Update utility.
  4. Unzip the contents of both packages and move them to your server system's hard drive.
  5. Depending on the operating system used, follow the specific instructions in the User Guide to install prerequisites and the Intel® OFU utility itself.
  6. Start firmware update process by running the flashupdt -u [<path to firmware update folder>]/flashupdt.cfg command.
  7. When prompted with the five options to choose from, select #3 (Update both, the SDR and FRU) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. Once done, reboot the system for BIOS and firmware update to take effect.

Intel® Server Board S1200SP and Intel® Server Systems R1000SPO Families

How do I update from the Embedded EFI Shell?

Note If you are updating from BIOS version below 03.01.0038, you must update to bridge BIOS version 03.01.2032 first.
  1. Download the latest EFI firmware update package for Intel® Server Boards and Systems S1200SP Family.
  2. Unzip the contents of the update package and copy all files to the root of the USB flash drive.
  3. Insert the USB flash drive to any available USB port of the server.
  4. Reboot the server to EFI Shell - during POST, hit the F6 key when prompted to access the Boot Manager, and choose EFI Shell.
  5. When in the EFI Shell, as the contents are on the root of the USB flash drive, the update should begin automatically. Simply hit any key when prompted. If the update process doesn't start on its own, proceed as follows:
    1. Type map -r to mount the USB flash drive and see what the USB flash drive ID is, usually fs0. The USB flash drive may also be mounted as fs1, depending on the other installed devices your system may have.
    2. Type fs0: (or fs1:) to access the USB flash drive.
    3. Type Startup.nsh to start the firmware update process. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. When prompted with the five options to choose from, select #3 (Update both, the SDR and FRU) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Once done, restart the system into the BIOS by pressing F2 during POST. Then, after you're inside the BIOS, press F9 to load the BIOS default settings. Press F10 to save the changes and exit.

How do I update from the operating system using Intel® One Boot Flash Update utility?

The steps in performing Firmware Update on EFI* Shell for other Intel® Server Boards and Intel® Server Systems:

Note For new integrations, check the System Chassis Fan connections. Refer to the product integration guide, or Quick Start guide, that shipped with the board. You can also find this information in the Technical Product Specification.

The following are the written steps for performing a firmware update:

  1. Download the latest firmware package.
  2. Extract the downloaded firmware. Once extracted, the files are in a folder.
  3. Format a USB flash drive in FAT32.
  4. Copy all the files inside the extracted folder, and then paste the files in the root directory of the USB flash drive, without creating a folder.
  5. Start the system and press F6 repeatedly to enter boot options.
  6. After you see boot options, connect the USB flash drive, click Internal EFI Shell, and press any key to start the update.
  7. After the firmware update starts, after the update of opcode area, you are prompted to select any of the three functions in the following list:
    • Only FRU Repository
    • Only SDR Repository
    • Both FRU and SDR Repository
    Clicking the third option prompts you to provide information about the chassis. Providing chassis information is optional. You can select No to skip the process.
  8. You are prompted to select the fan profile - click Medium Ramp.
  9. Answer the questions about the fan connections:
    • Is sys FAN 1 connected to sys fan header 1? Select Y if connected or else N.
    • Is sys FAN 2 connected to sys fan header 1? Select Y if connected or else N.
    • Is sys FAN 3 connected to sys fan header 1? Select Y if connected or else N.
    • Is sys FAN 4 connected to sys fan header 1? Select Y if connected or else N.
    • Is sys FAN 5 connected to sys fan header 1? Select Y if connected or else N.
    • Is the processor fan 1 connected to CPU FAN header 1? Select Y.
    • Is the processor fan 2 connected to CPU FAN header 2? Select Y if connected or else N.
  10. You are asked if the chassis has intrusion. Select N (in case of a third-party chassis, which does not have this feature).
  11. After the firmware is updated, the process is completed. Remove the USB flash drive and restart the server.
  12. After the restart, open the BIOS to confirm the new firmware version.
Note While these instructions are based on an Intel® Server Board S2400EP, the same steps might also be applicable to other Intel® Server Boards and Intel® Server System Families.
