Proper Handling Techniques and Precautions for Your M.2 Device
Avoid damage to your M.2 device. Here are the proper techniques to store, unpack, and install the M.2 device. After installation of the hardware, it may be necessary to initialize the drive before it can be used.
Handling Precautions
- Keep the device in the protective anti-static container until you are ready to install.
- To minimize static electricity, which could damage the device, ground yourself by either:
- Touching a non-painted metal surface.
- Wearing proper anti-static gloves and wrist strap.
- Handle the device with care.
- Do not touch the gold connectors.
- Always hold the device on the sides to avoid damaging the components.
- We recommend the following method to prepare the motherboard for installation of an M.2 device. This method is an example of the proper connection and attachment. The proper method may vary. Consult your motherboard or system vendor for extra guidance.
- The standoff height for the screw should be compatible with the connector height, making the M.2 device level.
Note You may need another standoff for your motherboard. Consult your motherboard vendor or user guide for more information.
Figure 2 demonstrates an improper height, and results in damage to the device. - Use spacers under the M.2 to control strain, as shown in Figure 1. If you don't use a spacer, take special care to only apply gentle pressure during screw installation.
- Once the motherboard is prepared, we recommend following this M.2 installation procedure:
- The standoff height for the screw should be compatible with the connector height, making the M.2 device level.
