Intel® Xe Super Sampling 2 (XeSS 2) technologies include:

  • Intel® XeSS Super Resolution (XeSS-SR)
  • Intel® XeSS Frame Generation (XeSS-FG)
  • Intel® Xe Low Latency (XeLL)

These technologies dramatically boost framerate at the highest visual quality while keeping your game responsive.

XeSS 2 technologies run most efficiently on Intel® Arc™ A- and B-series GPUs and on Intel® Core™ Ultra processors (Series 2) with built-in Intel Arc 100V and 100T series GPUs. XeSS-SR is available for previous generations of built-in GPUs and for other vendors with SM6.4 (DP4A) compatible devices.

xess includes super resolution, smooth frame generation, and low latency responsiveness

XeSS-FG requires XeLL to be enabled, but XeSS-SR and XeLL can be enabled independently.

Enabling all three technologies together delivers maximized gameplay improvements.

Intel® Xe Super Sampling Super Resolution (XeSS-SR)

XeSS-SR delivers innovative, framerate-boosting technology, which is supported by Intel Arc graphics and GPUs from other vendors. By upscaling through AI deep learning, XeSS-SR offers higher framerates with high image quality. This is the perfect technology for game developers who want to optimize image quality and performance.

XeSS-SR includes the following components:

  • An Intel implementation optimized to run on Intel Arc GPUs and Intel® Iris® Xe graphics.
  • A High-Level Shader Language (HLSL)-based cross-vendor implementation that runs on any GPU supporting Shader Model 6.4 or above. Hardware acceleration for DP4A or an equivalent is recommended.
  • An implementation dispatcher, which loads either the XeSS-SR runtime shipped with the game, the version provided with the Intel® Graphics Driver, or the cross-vendor implementation.

XeSS-SR offers the following presets, which map to different resolution scaling factors:

Intel® Xe Super Sampling Frame Generation (XeSS-FG)

XeSS-FG enables AI-based frame interpolation technology supported by Intel Arc GPUs. Using deep learning to generate detailed, high-resolution frames, this technology improves gaming performance and fluidity without degrading image quality.

XeSS-FG provides an API with an implementation of an IDXGISwapChain interface and contains functionality for resource lifetime management and interaction with an Intel Graphics Driver for display pacing. The API manages an internal command list and submits GPU work on the application-provided command queue.

XeLL integration is a prerequisite for XeSS-FG integration. The application must provide an XeLL context to XeSS-FG before initialization.

XeSS-FG uses XeLL for frame-pacing support, which is a critical element to ensure a good user experience.

Intel® Xe Low Latency (XeLL)

When incorporated into an application, XeLL receives per-frame timing information that allows it to calculate the CPU delay that an application should apply before work on the next frame begins. By doing so, the time that the application begins work on the CPU to the presentation on a screen is minimized, reducing input-to-screen latency in the process. The additional delay is calculated so that latency is minimized while the application’s performance is preserved.
