Intel Launches vConsolidate to Promote Virtualization Technology and Multi-Core Application Usage
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, Beijing, April 17, 2007 – Intel Corporation today demonstrated a new virtualization benchmark, vConsolidate, at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) and announced plans to work closely with its partners -- including international and local OEMs -- to promote virtualization and applications for multi-core processors. Virtualization will provide more secure, efficient and cost-effective choices for enterprise IT infrastructure.
Virtualization technology will help customers run multiple operating systems and applications on one physical server through server consolidation, which improves overall performance and computing capability while utilizing fewer servers. Amid increasing demands from customers for server consolidation and improved processor performance, virtualization applications on multi-core platforms have migrated from mainframes to the more modern X86 servers. With higher efficiency, energy, space and power consumption, virtualization plays an important role in the consolidation of large enterprise data centers and the selection of cost effective servers for SMBs.
Virtualization implementation could maximize clients' return on investment, save operation cost, reduce management cost, lessen human resource, improve performance of previous servers and reduce the cost for development and deployment of new business systems.
There are more business customers who select servers based on Intel multi-core processors and adopt virtualization technology such as VMware infrastructure to reduce the cost of data center consolidation. However, while selecting a server platform, and especially when comparing virtualization application, there's no universal standard to measure and reflect IT infrastructure performance or TCO level.
VConsolidate benchmark tests Virtualization performance by simulating real server performance in a typical environment. The vConsolidate benchmark at IDF shows Intel's new strategy at the advent of the virtualization era: promoting virtualization applications along with its partners to make the most out of multi-core technology. Meanwhile, Intel partners have voiced their approval of the technology. Inspur and Lenovo showcased their result of vConsolidate run on their servers during IDF.
"VConsolidate simulates real-world server performance in a typical environment, compares the performance of multi processor platforms in different virtualized environment," said Shannon Poulin, Enterprise marketing director of Intel. "We are very glad to promote this benchmark with our partners."
According to Hu Leijun, Inspur's technology director, "We believe that vConsolidate benchmark will illustrate improvement in performance when we highlight quad core based virtualization solutions of Inspur server platform to business computing users. Through Inspur's testing on vConsolidate, we could see the great performance improvement brought by quad-core processors, which shows the high performance and performance and price brought by Inspur's quad-core virtualization platform to its business customers."
Lei Feitao, director of Lenovo's Server Department, said, "As the local server OEM who have finished vConsolidate benchmark testing, the testing result of vConsolidate on Intel quad core based Lenovo R350 G6 is improved greatly when comparing to the result of none-Intel based similar products from other OEMs, which illustrate that Intel enjoys an obvious advantage and strong performance in virtualization application performance.
