Intel And Symbian To Deliver Data-Enabled Mobile Phone Platform

Symbian OS and Intel® XScale® Technology Optimization Will Offer Extended Capabilities for Mobile Phones and Applications

SYMBIAN DEVELOPER EXPO, LONDON, April 24, 2002 - Intel Corporation and Symbian have completed the optimization of the latest version of Symbian's operating system for data-enabled cellular phones, Symbian OS version 7.0, to support Intel applications processors based on the Intel® XScale® technology. Symbian and Intel plan to ship a board support package including the Symbian OS version 7.0 to help developers accelerate the process of designing next-generation cellular phones and applications utilizing these technologies.

Intel and Symbian worked together to optimize Symbian OS version 7.0 to provide rich multimedia and wireless capabilities for Intel® Personal Internet Client Architecture (Intel® PCA), Intel's development blueprint for designing wireless handheld communication devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities. Symbian has licensed its operating system to manufacturers representing more than 70 percent of the world's mobile phone industry.¹ The board support package will help support new and existing Symbian OS licensees as well as software developers.

As part of their ongoing cooperation, Intel and Symbian will share key information to benefit participants of the Symbian Developer Network and members of the Intel PCA Developer Network. The companies participating in these networks are leaders in building applications and services for a global mass-market of advanced, programmable mobile phones on both the Symbian OS and Intel PCA. Their respective global ecosystems help provide system integrators, original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers and independent software vendors with the hardware and software assistance they need to bring products to market more quickly.

In May, Intel will begin shipping the Intel DBPXA250 development system with the optimized Symbian OS board support package to mobile phone manufacturers and software developers building products using the Intel® PXA250 and Intel® PXA210 applications processors. The development systems will include a number of optimized development tools including a compiler and the Intel XScale microarchitecture XDB JTAG Debugger for Symbian OS. Intel will provide additional tools including the Intel® Integrated Performance Primitives (Intel IPP) and support for wireless technologies like GSM/GPRS, 802.11, and Bluetooth.
