Compaq Chooses Intel® StrongARM* Technology To Drive New Internet-Capable Handheld Device

Intel® SA-1110 Processor Speeds Web, Multimedia, Business Applications

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 19, 2000 - Intel Corporation announced today that Compaq Computer Corporation has chosen the Intel® StrongARM* SA-1110 processor and Intel® StrataFlash™ memory to power its new iPAQ* Pocket PC, a pocket-size device capable of running a variety of business, multimedia, and Internet applications.

The industry-leading performance-to-power ratio of Intel's StrongARM technology allows the Compaq* iPAQ Pocket PC to deliver high functionality, quick response to commands, an advanced user interface, and a 4,096-color display while minimizing battery consumption. The 206 MHz SA-1110 processor typically dissipates less than one-half watt, greatly extending battery life for pocket-sized and handheld devices while furnishing robust performance for video playback, sound recording and playback, speech and handwriting recognition, Web browsing, and business applications such as e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets.

Compaq also chose Intel StrataFlash memory to store both application and operating system code. Intel StrataFlash memory blends high performance, high reliability, and low power to deliver flash benefits in a smaller, lighter form factor.

SA-1110 Processor Supports Advanced Functions
With the StrongARM SA-1110 processor and 32 MB of memory at its core, the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC accommodates a convergence of personal and professional pursuits. It can display MPEG4 video and digital photography, access Microsoft* Word* and Excel* file attachments, browse the Web with Internet Explorer* software, and play MP3 music titles and audio books. The pocket-sized PC supports USB connectivity with both notebook and desktop PCs as well as network and wireless communication using soon-to-be-available expansion packs.

"Intel's StrongARM technology is ideal for the next generation of advanced handheld devices," said Peter Green, general manager for Intel's Handheld Computing Division. "Intel is very pleased that Compaq has chosen the high-performance, low-power StrongARM processor and StrataFlash memory as key technologies for the leading-edge iPAQ Pocket PC."

Ted Clark, vice president, iAppliances at Compaq Computer Corporation, said, "Compaq has a revolutionary, extremely flexible product in the iPAQ Pocket PC. At 206 MHz, its Intel StrongARM processor delivers quick response and plenty of performance to run a variety of PIM, business, and multimedia applications that allow customers to access their business and personal information anytime, anywhere."

"With the combination of Microsoft's Pocket PC software and Intel's StrongARM SA-1110 processor, the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC is a small yet powerful device that can keep users connected to their important information any time, anyplace," said Rogers Weed, marketing director, mobile devices division, Microsoft Corporation.
