This error may occur in the Quartus^® II software version 5.0 when the physical synthesis register retiming option is enabled, and incremental compilation is turned on.

The problem has been fixed in the Quartus II software version 5.0 SP1.

To avoid this error in the Quartus II software version 5.0, turn off register retiming in the Physical Synthesis page under Fitter Settings in the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu).
