Content Type: Troubleshooting   |   Article ID: 000091158   |   Last Reviewed: 07/14/2022

Environment

Operating System

Windows 11* Family, Windows® 10 family

Description

CPU frequency is not constant and drops a few minutes after boot.

Resolution

Follow the troubleshooting steps below:

  1. Use the benchmark in the latest version of the Intel® XTU.
  2. Make sure all other applications are closed.
  3. Make sure the BIOS is updated to the latest version
  4. Set the BIOS to default then go to BIOS settings to ensure PL1 and PL2 values are set properly, as these values may impact/limit the cores' turbo frequency.
  5. Perform a clean install of Windows 11*, as this operating system can use the Intel® Thread Director to optimize the use of 12th generation P and E cores for maximum performance.
  6. Use a high-performance cooling solution (very efficient air cooling models / All In One with at least a 2-fan radiator or a custom water loop).
  7. Use a high-quality motherboard with a VRM capable of providing the power needed by your Intel processor.
  8. Ensure your power supply meets the required power consumption of the PC while using an Intel® 12th generation processor.
  9. Depending on the rest of your PC parts (especially the video card) you may need to use an up to 1000W high-quality power supply
