Why Is Intel® Virtualization Showing Disabled in the System While It Is Supported?

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Summary

Explains application dependencies on hardware virtualization extensions and how to select software.

Description

Specification page of Intel® Processor lists that Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT-x) is supported but unable to run any virtualization-related commands on system.

Resolution

Many virtualization applications depend on hardware virtualization extensions that are available on most modern processors. It includes Intel VT-x and AMD-V*. Only one software component can use this hardware at a time, and this is by design.  The hardware cannot be shared between virtualization applications.

To use other virtualization software, you must disable Hyper-V Hypervisor,* Device Guard*, and Credential Guard*.

To verify if Hyper-V is running and how to disable it, refer to the article Determine whether the Hyper-V hypervisor is running.
