How to Set Up “Serial over LAN” for Intel® Server Boards and Systems Based on Intel® 62X Chipset

Unable to access the server through SOL

Resolution

Method 1:

  1. Enter BIOS, click Advanced tab, select Serial Port Configuration, enable Serial A Enable option.
  2. Go to Server Management tab, select Console Redirection, enable SOL for BaseBoard Mgmt, SOL for BaseBoard Mgmt2 and SOL for Dedicated Mgmt NIC options, enable Serial Port A under Console Redirection option.
  3. Press F10 to save and exit.
  4. Login to BMC web console, click Configuration tab, select SOL, under Serial Over LAN, select Channel-1 from the LAN channel dropdown, click the checkbox Enable SOL for BaseBoard Mgmt and select Save. Repeat the same for Channel-2 and Channel-3.
  5. Restart server
  6. Login into BMC web console, select Remote control tab, select Launch SOL from the list, click Launch SOL button.

If above method does not work, follow Method 2.

Method 2:

  1. Enter BIOS, click Advanced tab, select Serial Port Configuration, enable Serial A Enable option.
  2. Go to Server Management tab, select Console Redirection, disable SOL for BaseBoard Mgmt & SOL for BaseBoard Mgmt2,  enable SOL for Dedicated Mgmt NIC, enable  Serial Port A and disable Serial Port B under Console Redirection option.
  3. Press F10 to save and exit.
  4. Login to BMC web console, click Configuration tab, select SOL, under Serial Over LAN, select Channel-3 from the LAN channel dropdown, click the checkbox Enable SOL for BaseBoard Mgmt and select Save.
  5. Restart server
  6. Login into BMC web console, select Remote control tab, select Launch SOL from the list, click Launch SOL button.

Use below IPMI command to check if the SOL has been correctly configurated.
Ipmitool -I lanplus -H <IP_ADDRESS> -U <USER> -P <PASSWORD> sol
