Steps to fix BSOD (Fatal System Error) error when Windows* failed to boot
Description
SSD gets a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error: c000021a {Fatal system Error} when Windows 10 failed to boot.
This error can occur if Winlogon.exe or Csrss.exe stops working. Possible reasons for this are:
- There were corrupt system files in the computer
- There was a failed upgrade
- Incomplete installation of a software program
Resolution
Review the steps below as potential solutions:
- Run the SFC (system file check) scan on the Windows 10 drive by booting to “safe mode with networking” from the Windows 10 installation media. Unplug all external devices like flash drive, printer, scanner, and so on (except mouse and keyboard) connected to the computer and restart the system to check if the computer boots to the desktop screen.
- If still not able to boot, attempt to repair your BCD in Command Prompt by Booting from your Installer
- Insert the Windows 10 installation media and restart your computer.
- Boot from the Windows 10 installation media.
- Choose your language and click next..
- Click Repair Your Computer.
- Select Command Prompt and try the following commands:
bootrec /fixMBR
bootrec /fixBoot
bootrec /rebuildBCD - Restart the computer.
- If Windows still fails to boot, perform a Low Level Format on the drive and Update the firmware of the drive.
- If the problem still exists, if possible try another Solid State Drive on the system to see if it functions properly.
