Can I use the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v6 Family in a non-R revision to the Intel® Server Board S1200SP Family and its Intel® Server Systems?
Yes, the hardware is compatible, but the Intel® Server Board has to be at a minimum of BIOS version 02.01.0049 to boot with Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v6 installed. Once booted, you must upgrade to production BIOS for the CPU to run properly and the new features to become available.
Steps
- Download BIOS version 02.01.0049.
- Install Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v5 CPU.
- Update to BIOS version 02.01.0049.
- Install Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v6 CPU.
- Update to production BIOS.
If I don’t need a refresh board to use the Intel® Xeon® Processor E3 1200 v6 Family, why did Intel launch a new R (refresh) revision of the Intel® Server Board S1200SP Family and its Intel® Server Systems?
The main reason for the board revision change was to identify boards that have BIOS 02.01.0049 installed in the factory, so that customers know immediately that these boards can boot with an Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1200 v6 installed (as they have the R suffix).
Can I use a processor featuring embedded Intel® HD Graphics?
Processors with embedded video are only supported on the Intel® Server Board S1200SPL and/or S1200SPLR. Refer to Processor Compatibility for the Intel® Server Board S1200SP Family
Notice that the DisplayPort, which is only present on the Intel® Server Board S1200SPL/R, is the one used for the processor graphics.
