Why do I get a Cannot Connect to COM error when I try to connect my board to a COM port?

First, check that the USB cables are connected properly and that the Intel® Edison Board powers on. For more information on how to power your board, see Connectors on the Intel Edison Board.

Second, confirm that a new drive named Edison mounts on your PC. If the drive doesn't mount properly, the USB cables might be improperly connected, or bad. The board may not be powered on.

Third, check Windows Device Manager* to verify that you're trying to connect through the USB Serial Port and not the Intel Edison Virtual Com Port. For more details, see Setting up a Serial Terminal on Windows. If these steps don't work, set up Wi-Fi or Ethernet over USB. Then, connect to your board through an SSH connection.

I've connected my board to the COM port and opened a terminal window. Why am I not getting a response?

You may be connected to an incorrect, but active, COM port such as the Virtual COM port. If you have Windows*, check the Device Manager to confirm that the board is connected to the USB Serial Port. For more details, see Setting up a Serial Terminal on Windows. A COM port conflict can cause this issue. Try restarting your computer and your board. You can also try reinstalling your drivers.

How do I find my serial port in OS X*?

If you're using OS X and not sure how to find your serial ports, see Setting up a Serial Terminal with Mac OS X.
