Microcode Update Error Received After Upgrading Intel® Xeon® Processor
Intel® Xeon® Processors allow for minor software updates from within the motherboard BIOS specific to the processor stepping. The processor stepping is similar to a hardware version. The stepping number is incremented as minor modifications are made to the processor design, like errata corrections.
What am I seeing?
If the BIOS doesn't properly identify the processor stepping, you may encounter one of the following microcode update errors:
- Error: Microcode update required
- Error: Microcode was not found in the system BIOS for the installed CPU
- Error: BIOS update data incorrect
How to fix it
To address a microcode update error encountered after upgrading your Intel® Xeon® Processor, follow these suggested steps:
- Verify Microcode Update Compatibility: Ensure that the microcode update you are attempting to apply is compatible with your specific processor's family, model, and stepping. Each unique processor stepping/package combination has an associated microcode update.
- Check Microcode Revision: Verify that you are using the latest microcode revision available from Intel. The proper microcode update is defined as the latest microcode update available for your processor family, model, and stepping.
- Update BIOS: Make sure your BIOS is updated to the latest version. The BIOS is responsible for ensuring that all logical processors in the system have the correct microcode update installed. During early POST, the BIOS checks the processor signature and uses it to look up and apply the correct microcode update.
- Use OS Patch Load (Runtime Microcode Update): If the error persists after a BIOS update, consider using an OSPL, also known as a Runtime Microcode Update, if supported. This method allows applying the microcode update without a system reboot.
- Review Microcode Update Procedures: Refer to the Intel microcode update documentation to ensure you are following the correct procedures. For large microcode updates, BIOS modifications may be required to support the maximum microcode update size (64 KB).
- BIOS Options: Before installing a BIOS revision, verify that the Allow BIOS Update option is enabled in the BIOS (if applicable).
- Fallback and Recovery: If a microcode update fails, BIOS and firmware mechanisms may allow falling back to the last working microcode patch. Ensure these mechanisms are in place to prevent system instability.
- Monitor Intel Product Security Advisories: Keep an eye on Intel's Product Security Advisories and update guidance documents for any new microcode updates and recommended mitigations.
- Consult OEM: Contact the system or motherboard manufacturer for the appropriate BIOS update files and instructions.
- Consult Intel Support: If you continue to experience issues, contact your Intel Field Representative or Intel Support for assistance. They can provide the latest microcode updates and offer guidance specific to your situation.
Note: | If the system or motherboard manufacturer doesn't provide BIOS update files, they may not validate for use with the processor installed. In this case, the processor is incompatible with the motherboard. |
