Upgrade information

Make sure your desktop board's socket supports your processor socket. Refer to your motherboard vendor for socket information. You can get this information from your desktop board manufacturer. To find processor's socket info, refer to How to Identify Your Intel® Desktop Processor Socket.

You can also use the Intel® Product Compatibility Tool to see available motherboard vendors for your processor.

Chassis requirements

No, chassis requirements are the same for the Intel® Core™ i5 Desktop Processor platforms using the LGA1150 / LGA1151 / LGA1155 / LGA1156 / LGA1200 / LGA1700 sockets. Note that these processors are not compatible between the different sockets because of electrical, mechanical, and keying differences. We highly recommend using a Thermally Advantaged Chassis (TAC).

Compatibility across different socketsProcessors for one type of socket aren't compatible with other socket types because of electrical, mechanical, and keying differences.

The boxed fan heatsinks work between LGA1200 and LGA1151 sockets because the socket footprint is the same. You need to match the Thermal Design Profile (TDP) of the respective processors to properly match the right heatsinks to the right processors.

Compatibility concerns for Intel® Core™ i5 Desktop Processors that use the LGA1151 socket

Intel® Core™ i5-9600K and i5-8xxx Desktop Processors use a chipset based on the Intel® 300 Series Chipset Boards. Intel® Core™ i5-6xxx and i7-7xxx Desktop Processors use a chipset based on the Intel® 100 and 200 Series Chipset Boards. The Intel Core i5-8xxx Processors aren't compatible with Intel® 100 and 200 Series Chipset Boards.

Check with your desktop board manufacturer to confirm they support the processor you want to use and the recommended update process.

Compatibility concerns for Intel® Core™ i5 Desktop Processors that use the LGA1155 socket

Intel® Core™ i5-2xxx Desktop Processors use a chipset based on Intel® 6 Series Express Chipsets. Intel® Core™ i5-3xxx Desktop Processors use a chipset based on Intel® 7 Series Express Chipsets. The processors are backward and forward compatible with some notable exceptions.

Check with your desktop board manufacturer to confirm they support the processor you want to use and the recommended update process.

If you install an Intel® Core™ i5-3xxx Processor on a desktop board based on the Intel® 6 Series Express Chipset, it might require updated BIOS, ME8 firmware, and drivers.

See how to update the BIOS on Intel® Desktop Boards with Intel® 6 Series Express Chipsets.

Memory

DDR3 / DDR4 / DDR5 memory voltage limitations

We recommend using memory that adheres to the JEDEC* memory specification. Anything over the specified voltage can damage the processor or significantly reduce processor life span.

  • For DDR3 memory: 1.5 volts, plus or minus 5%
  • For DDR3L memory: 1.35 volts, plus or minus 5%
  • For DDR4 memory: 1.2 volts, plus or minus 5%
  • For DDR5 memory: 1.1 volts

Features

Intel® Turbo Boost Technology

Intel® Core™ i5 Desktop Processors support Intel® Turbo Boost Technology.

Can I run a 16-bit application with a 4th Generation Intel® Processor?
  • 64-bit operating systems don't support 16-bit components, 16-bit processes, or 16-bit applications.
  • 16-bit applications and software aren't validated on 4th Generation Intel® Processor Families.
  • 16-bit might run on 32-bit operating systems but isn't optimized for a 32-bit operating system.
Note Document 325462, Intel® 64, and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer Manual, section 21.2, Performance:
Always use 32-bit code segments when possible. They run much faster than 16-bit code segments on P6 family processors, and somewhat faster on earlier IA-32 processors.
  • See your software vendor for 32-bit or 64-bit versions to use with this newer hardware and operating system.
