Intel To Acquire Corollary Inc.
Investment to expand the market segment for Intel-based server solutions
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 30, 1997 -- Intel Corporation today announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Corollary Inc., of Irvine, Calif., a privately held supplier of Intel Architecture based multiprocessing technology. The acquisition is aimed at accelerating the availability of high-performance, eight-way server solutions based on the Intel Architecture.
Higher performance Intel-based servers continue to deliver increased levels of performance, scalability, manageability and serviceability. With the acquisition of Corollary, Intel will be able to offer products that extend system performance across the enterprise. The ability to scale to eight processors while preserving the economics of volume manufacturing technologies will bring unequaled value to business computing and move Intel-based servers into higher end market segments.
"Corporations are ready to apply the price-performance benefits of the Intel-based servers across all levels of the enterprise," said John Miner, vice president and general manager, Intel's Enterprise Server Group. "The acquisition of Corollary gives Intel the ability to extend the upper range of our product line and meet customer demands for highest performance eight-way Intel-based servers."
"As a pioneer in PC multiprocessing since the mid 1980s, we've been immensely gratified to see the growing market acceptance of symmetric multiprocessing," said George White, president, Corollary Inc. "This has been evidenced by the success of Intel's Pentium® Pro processor with built-in support for four-way multiprocessing. Now with Intel's commitment and resources supporting Corollary's already well-accepted Profusion architecture, eight-way multiprocessing will become mainstream much more quickly."
Corollary is a leading supplier of multiprocessing technology based upon the Intel Architecture. Many of the industry's leading system vendors have based their server systems on Corollary's previous designs. Corollary's Profusion architecture employs a unique cache coherent buffered cross-bar switch design, effectively harnessing the performance of up to eight microprocessors.
Under terms of the acquisition agreement, Corollary will retain its name and identity and be a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel, located in Irvine. White will remain president of Corollary. Corollary will focus on designing and developing advanced architectures and products to support future generations of Intel processors.
Corollary is a leading supplier of high-end multiprocessing technology based on the Intel Architecture to systems manufacturers worldwide.
